decking in a last lawn garden

Decks and Patios have long been seen as a family-friendly and fun way to create extra space in the garden. Small gardens can be a challenge. Figuring out how to turn that space into a usable place where you can relax and enjoy time with your family is tricky. Does a garden need to be big to have a deck or patio?

First, let’s take a look and see if one option is better than the other for a small garden.

Decking Vs Patio

Decking

  • Most often made of wood or vinyl.
  • Built on different levels.
  • Attached to homes or freestanding.
  • A Cover or Pergola can be built to add shade or shelter.
  • Can be built in different sizes.

Patio

  • Made out of concrete, pavers, stone, tiles, bricks, pebbles, or rocks.
  • Built at ground level.
  • Attached to homes or freestanding.
  • A Cover or Pergola can be built to add shade or shelter.
  • Built-in many shapes and sizes.

As you can see, there are more similarities than differences between the two. In the end, whether you choose a patio or decking is going to depend on your preferred materials, or if you need an outdoor space on a higher level or not.

How much space is needed for a Deck or Patio?

small deck

It is recommended that a deck be no smaller than 8ft by 8ft which is spacious enough for a couple of deck chairs and a small table.

However, a patio size can be as small as 7ft by 7ft which isn’t much smaller and can still accommodate your two chairs and a small table.

Getting Creative

If space is a challenge, you can always get creative with what you have. Consider the following options:

  • Have a decking on multiple platforms. Multiple levels of decking create different areas and spaces for you to use.
  • Combine a mini-deck with a mini patio to highlight a change in areas and materials making the garden look bigger.
  • Have built-in seating on your deck to save space.
  • Have your deck stained in a light colour to make the area seem bigger.
  • Don’t underestimate the potential beauty of a fence-to-fence deck or patio. This will make the most use of space near your door and make your garden seem longer as it turns into a yard.
  • Don’t go square. Patios especially look amazing as a circular area. Try a curvy option in one corner of your garden.

Décor Makes a Difference

patio surrounded by plants

Sometimes it is less about the patio or deck and more about how you decorate the area. Your choice of furniture, colours and plants can make a big difference to how that area is perceived because the wrong colours or furniture pieces can make it seem small and crowded.

Try surrounding the area with nature using vertical plants to give it a cosy feel. Plants that climb fences or hang down from baskets are excellent options for this.

Include decorative features in your decking. This may mean that you have inbuilt seating on your decking that is a different colour from the rest of your deck. It could be that you have a small tree in the centre of your deck, or you may choose to border your deck or patio with plants of vivid colour. Purple heather can create a bold and comfortable look around a patio.

Water features and bold lighting can make a small area come to life. Throw cushions and blankets can make them more comfortable. Firepits are the perfect choice for late evenings of relaxation in your garden.
