In recent years artificial lawns have gained popularity, mostly due to how fresh the gardens look all year round, without the need for constant maintenance. With the added benefit of not needing to be mowed every week, it has become the lawn of choice for the elderly, the infirm, big companies with lots of grounds to take care of as well as those with little time due to work and family commitments, and those with kids.  However, confusion reigns when it comes to maintaining artificial turf. Some people say you don’t need to do anything; others say you need to do a lot of work. People say it’s too complicated to maintain artificial turf. However, the truth of the turf is much easier to bear.

Here is everything you need to know about maintaining your artificial turf.

Artificial Turf: Fact vs Myth

Over the years people have contemplated the pros and cons of installing synthetic or artificial grass in their gardens. Because of this, speculation about the maintenance of artificial grass also began to circulate.

Before we tell you how to take care of your turf we will clear the air on some of the more common myths about the maintenance of artificial grass:

Artificial grass does not need taking care of.

LLP Artificial Grass

This is an easy one to fall for. After all, artificial grass is not going to grow out of control, nor will it die from lack of sunlight. However, it does need maintenance to keep it looking real and fresh.

Failing to take care of artificial grass in your garden means it will only last 10-15 years, but with a little regular maintenance, you can double that lifespan!

Artificial grass needs a lot of maintenance.

While artificial grass does need maintenance to look better and last longer, this doesn’t mean you need to be out in the garden every day cleaning each individual strand. In fact, only a little effort is needed to take care of your artificial lawn.

Pet Dogs destroy artificial lawns.

This theory works for any pet as it is mostly about the pet waste that they leave in the garden. Dog pee especially is pointed out to make artificial grass smell. This is part myth and part true.

Dog pee does naturally smell, but if you maintain artificial grass properly that smell is not going to hang around. Read on to find out the best way to maintain your artificial lawn.

Artificial turf doesn’t get weeds.

The thing with weeds is, many of them don’t need to be planted in the soil to sprout. They can grow wherever a bird drops them so long as they can get anchored and draw nutrients.

Artificial turf is created in such a way that water will naturally drain through it. While this prevents your garden from flooding in the rain, it also means weeds can get what they need to grow on your artificial turf.

However, they will be easy to pluck out when you spot them growing. Alternatively, you can use a mild weed killing spray to prevent them from ever being an issue.

How to Maintain Your Artificial Turf

Maintaining your artificial turf is easy.

The first thing to remember is that you only need to clean the grass once a month. This job should only take 5-10 minutes depending on the size of your artificial lawn.

  1. Remove debris from the grass.
    1. The easiest way to accomplish this is by using a medium brush and brushing against the grain. Leaves are easier to remove when dry.
  2. Spray with plain water or artificial turf cleaner.

Note: If you have a dog you may want to spray the turf down more often to keep it smelling fresh. Some dog owners with artificial turf prefer to give their lawn a quick once over with the hose once a week.

Tips to Maintaining Your Artificial Turf

Here are some other great tips to help you maintain your lawn.

There is nothing wrong with putting furniture on you lawn, after all, there is nothing better than being able to sit outside on a warm summers evening and enjoy good company as you watch the sunset.

However, if you use castors underneath the feet of your furniture you greatly reduce the chances of damaging the turf.

Barbecues are amazing things. It brings out the macho in men while creating fond memories of families and friends getting together for good food and cocktails.

However, do not set it on your artificial lawn as the heat can damage it. The same goes for fire pits, bonfires, and other heat sources.

Animal Mess

Clean up pet waste as soon as possible. This will prevent any bad smells from permeating into the grass making your lawn fresher for longer.

Human Mess

Food, drink, blood. All are likely to come in contact with your grass at some point.

Artificial turf is stain resistant so you need not worry about the mess changing its colour, however, you still want to clean that mess up quickly. The most efficient way to do this is to hose it down with plain water or artificial grass cleaner.
